Bucee's sucks shit, no doubt

But I'm weary of this liberal notion that red States have nothing to offer the world. What the hell does it mean to "have actual cultural attractions"? Do red States not have culture?

Does Louisana not have a culture? Does the Black Belt, throughout the South not have a distinct culture? Does New Mexico, or Texas not have significant Hispanic population that heavily influence their respective cultures? How about South Dakota's heavy indigenous population? Or Oklahoma? How about Appalachia?

Whiteness in America is, admittedly, not unlike the Borg, wherein all cultural artifacts and language of the many white ethic groups which immigrated here, were assimilated. They gave up the lifeways of their homelands in exchange for a kind of security, and thus for their great grandchildren to be run over by a Ford F250 in a Bucee's parking lot.

But that doesn't mean these places are without rich, deep, and important cultures. The United States is a prisonhouse of nations. Oklahoma, alone, is where we shoved a significant portion of this continents indigenous people. The fact that they're state government is lorded over by the most unhinged gringos America has to offer doesn't make it a place worth ignoring or giving up on. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Them words are gonna be real awkward when Texas turns blue this election…

"Business-friendly" doesn't really sound like them at all after seeing that John Oliver episode on them attacking tons of other businesses over logos.

As much as I did want to visit one someday just to try a few things I dont think I will he going out of my way if the chance does arise. Also announcing your political allignment should be a death sentance for any company... nobody wants to know this info.

Also announcing your political allignment should be a death sentance for any company... nobody wants to know this info.

There's an app called Goods Unite Us which tells you what political parties different companies donate to, and it's searchable.

In case you do want to know that info.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 34 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Business friendly just means lower corporate income tax I'm pretty sure.

[–] clanker_victim_555@lemmy.world 25 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Lower taxes, less regulation, less enforcement, maybe some union busting and general worker suppression.

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world -2 points 40 minutes ago

I hear they pay pretty good. I don’t think they have a union problem.

[–] earlgrey0@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 hour ago

Or having the government pay for improvements that the business owners would normally have to do.

After the novelty wears off, I don't understand the appeal of Buc-ee's. It's a shitty convenience store, because it's not quick or convenient, and everything it has that other convenience stores don't is either shitty, overpriced, or both. You want food? Food is higher quality elsewhere, and about as convenient. Clothes? Higher quality and cheaper elsewhere, and about as convenient. The only reason to go there is if you want Buc-ee's branded souvenirs. The bathrooms are nice, I guess, but a decent convenience store like Casey's or QuikTrip has bathrooms just as nice and you'll be in and out much quicker.

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemmy.zip 7 points 43 minutes ago

Their bathrooms are nice, their food is good by rest stop standards, and their gas is on the cheaper side. It's a solid choice to stop at when you're on the road if you're unsure about nearby options. That's it. I don't get the white suburbanite consumerist cult integrating a gas station into their personality. It's like funko pop people but somehow worse

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 9 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Their gas is super cheap compared to everyone else in my area. Like - I paid 2.99 a gallon there yesterday and another place nearby was like 3.79.

I actually don't fully understand why their gas is so cheap. I would think it was to get people in the store, but Bucees doesn't generally have the gas prices posted on signs like everyone else.

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 3 points 39 minutes ago

In Florida they post the price. I think it’s the law there because of the shady gas stations near airports over charging

[–] frunch@lemmy.world 4 points 49 minutes ago

I think another part of the equation is that by the time the novelty wears off, the local competition will likely be wiped out or be less formidable at very least.

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 11 points 1 hour ago

The more I read about Buc-ees, the more I hate them.

[–] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 2 points 48 minutes ago

I would have no reason to walk into a Bucees. FDJT

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 7 points 1 hour ago

Yep, and buc-ees is shit regardless.

[–] TheJesusaurus@piefed.ca 21 points 2 hours ago

It's my fault for thinking that buc-ees pay and benefits and seemingly positive attitude towards employment meant they werent shit fucks.

[–] ALoafOfBread@lemmy.ml 21 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Bucees sucks. I hate going into them. There are 10000 gas pumps that are always occupied and trying to get around the parking lot is a hazard. Inside is even worse with 1,000,000 lumen fluorescent lights and being packed full of gawking people.

[–] crusa187@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 hour ago

Their brisket is mediocre at best, and if you’re spending hard earned money on gas station merch, you should probably reconsider your life choices.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 14 points 2 hours ago (4 children)

actual cultural attactions and don't need to pretend their gas stations are one

Bro has never been to a Wawa. Or a Sheetz.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 3 points 51 minutes ago

Yeah I was gonna say, people in NJ take Wawa seriously, even if it’s not as good as it used to be

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 13 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Okay. We have cultural attractions aside from our gas stations. Better?

[–] BonsaiBoo@lemmy.world 12 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Oklahoman here - small town youth literally go Walmart for date nights. So grocery stores, too.

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 9 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

That's sad. They deserve better

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social -1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

They deserve better

Eh... I'll wait and see who they voted for before I decide if they deserve better than date night at walmart.

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 1 points 30 minutes ago

I k.Oklahoma is a bad environment but young people aren't allowed to vote and aren't allowed to leave until they're adults. No one should be stuck in a place that sucks that hard for that long

Hey now Wawa Canada has a giant goose. 😃

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 5 points 1 hour ago

Strange how they only open in blue areas of red states.

[–] LuminousLuddite@lemmy.today 1 points 48 minutes ago

The only time I've gone further into a Buc-ees than the ice coolers was to use the bathroom and holy shit it was packed. The vibes were also REALLY fucking weird, lots of cowboy boots, people making whistling noises and uncomfortable looks. I quietly stifled my panic attack, took care of my business, and got the hell out of there faster than Usain Bolt.

[–] Lexam@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

I live in a red state and won't go to them.
