Just go to therapy, my guy. Arbitrarily naming bodies of water that nobody outside your country will use will not fill the hole in you.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 5 minutes ago

I mean just the fact he's so stupid he can't pull something from history to make a point. Shit sounds like when you ask toddlers what to name things, "what do you want to call the dog in the backyard?" "Backyard dog!"

[–] modus@lemmy.world 2 points 27 minutes ago

I wish there were more holes in him.

Google Maps obeyed Pedo Daddy instantly when it came to Gulf of Mexico.

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (2 children)

Well, sorta?

The name was changed for US users, as google's policy is to use whatever a user's country's official name for something is (also true for where borders are drawn and so on). In mexico (and presumably every other country), it's still "Golfo de México". I don't know if they'll change Lake Ontario to whatever it was trump did but it would surprise me if they didn't, and just as with the Gulf it's going to only be americans that are impacted & everyone else will be continuing to ignore his nonsense.

edit: (You apparently can change your domain to view what it looks like from other countries - though I couldn't figure out how to do it in the ten seconds I tried just now. Some domains display some alternative names in parens too I'm told, though I haven't looked into that one at all. I know in Mexico and Egypt it didn't show up as Gulf of America when I checked, so there's that. The next most famous example is the shitshow that is the Persian Gulf / Gulf of Iran / Arabian Gulf debate.)

[–] faercol@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I'm French and in my case it's "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)", so yeah both names

[–] black0ut@pawb.social 6 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Same thing in Spain. Kind of disgusting they're forcing it on everyone.

CoMaps still shows the proper name (Gulf of Mexico), and no mention of the Gulf of America, so that's another easy win for OSM and CoMaps

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

Huh - very interesting! Does it display that way in both english / spanish?

[–] faercol@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Oh that's an interesting question. Could be different. But no, just checked for French. It displays the same thing in both English and French

[–] Padit@feddit.org 2 points 1 hour ago

In Germany it says "Golf von Mexiko (Gold von Amerika)".

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

So weird, I wonder why it wasn't doing that in arabic. God it's not enough google is evil, they have to be obtuse about their shit while they do it.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

It's not officially the Gulf of America in the US. The President can't just arbitrarily rename shit.

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

In the US, the maintaining authority on references for geographic features is the Bureau of Geographic Names. It's a federal agency operating under the secretary of the interior - and unfortunately, the president does have the unilateral authority direct them to change official names (in theory he can't change it for internal political reasons - declaring something the "Barack Obama memorial dick-shaped rock" or whatever - but I don't know if that has ever been ruled on)

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

There's a public process the agency is required to go through for changing names of places. Trump bypassed that and had the USGS update the GNIS with the name change through an Executive Order and not through the BGN. When called out on it they tried to get it through Congress, but the Senate didn't approve the name change.

It isn't the Gulf of America.

The board actually did vote on the name in 2006, but rejected it.

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

It is currently listed in the GNIS as "Gulf of America" (you can confirm this here)

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 1 points 4 minutes ago* (last edited 3 minutes ago)

Yes. But it wasn't changed through the legal public process, so the GNIS is not accurate.

Who cares what this senile child-fucker calls anything?

I just know he's the main character in the TRUMP-EPSTEIN FILES (TM)

[–] nao@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

When is he going to find out that no one really cares what he is calling things. It only gets covered because it is so ridiculous.

lake superior would have been a bigger flex despite its nationally ambiguous name. typical american half-measure that's indicative of a society that had to invent viagra because it couldn't pop a boner.

[–] Sludgeyy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Are you talking about Lake Saskatchewan?

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 20 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

They should rename every lake to "Lake America". And replace hard words Trump struggles with to Trump.

Like positive. Or negative. Or vaccination.

[–] 1985MustangCobra@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

google maps hasn't changed it. guess google maps is to woke now

[–] kahjtheundedicated@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I still get flashbanged every time I see “gulf of America” on Google Maps. The list of stuff to unfuck once he’s out of office is so long, I wonder how long that’ll take to fix.

Even setting my vpn to Canada doesn’t entirely free me of that

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Doesn't matter how long or short the list is. Americans won't be happy with any amount of progress and run back to Republicans in a cycle or two so we can watch a low IQ conservative fuck everything up again.

[–] Manjushri@piefed.social 27 points 10 hours ago

Lake Epstein Files

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 15 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Is Google maps a thing? Have they changed the name?

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 18 points 8 hours ago (3 children)

They did when he declared the Gulf of Mexico had a new name, so did others. Nearly immediately.

[–] TrumpetX@programming.dev 7 points 5 hours ago

I stopped using Google Maps the second this happened. Fuck that cowtow bullshit.

[–] Mokopa@lemmy.world 7 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

Only if you were looking at the map from a US IP address iirc. It's still gulf of Mexico for the rest of the world, but with the stupid name in brackets now after it.

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

They should put what everywhere calls every location in brackets if they’re gonna do that.

The names were not and will not be changed in an official capacity.

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 11 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Yup. I just checked MapQuest though, and they did not.

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

Thank you MQ.

[–] Furbag@pawb.social 10 points 8 hours ago

If you want to know who still has integrity left, just open up their maps/navigation app and see what they call the Gulf of Mexico.
