Meta is a national security threat.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 17 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

They're not the only ones.

Reddit stole the r/NoKings subreddit and has locked it out. They claim it's up for adoption as of 5-months-ago but will of course never cede it to the organizers of No King's.

ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN etc., have barely mentioned it, and it doesn't remotely come up in Google News save for a sparse few pages of local news stories.

The only good news from representing my area is that while the protest was half the size of past ones, general support from people on the road was much higher with much less dissent.

[–] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 hour ago (3 children)

There were protests all over my city yesterday and I can find barely any coverage. I even looked at Reddit, which was flooded with No Kings pictures back in March, and there was barely anything for the events yesterday. Definitely sus as hell.

[–] TheLowestStone@lemmy.world 16 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

This is why protest has to be disruptive. A bunch of people holding funny signs in a park on a Saturday afternoon doesn't have an impact.

[–] joseki@lemmy.zip 4 points 49 minutes ago

It connects people with like minded people who also decided to show up so from a networking and community building perspective it's not worthless. Lots of people meet the contacts that will later recruit them to knock on doors or phone bank or run for office in the future who would never show up to a town meeting or city council meeting.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 6 points 1 hour ago

Can absolutely confirm. I'm not American so I get most of my news through, well, the news and while I've seen people alluding to the protests I'm only getting a fraction of a fraction of the information I was getting in March.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 2 points 46 minutes ago

I didn't hear anything about these protests. Not even on Lemmy. But I don't use Facebook products nor reddit, so my information sources are a little spotty.

There is only one correct answer: stop using Facebook

[–] Z745812939054@lemmy.zip 18 points 2 hours ago (3 children)

after years of saying this, i gave up. people have integrated facebook into their lives to the degree that saying "delete facebook" is pretty much the same as saying "cut your own balls off." they won't do it, no matter if they even acknowledge facebook sucks and is a waste of time. that's rare, though. usually it's "i can't leave facebook, i would lose contact with everyone!" same shit with twitter, instagram, ticktock, snapchat--all that bullshit

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 5 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

You will be locked out of your local community without Facebook. I’ve been off it for over a decade but needed to get rid of a couch without paying $150 to do it and Facebook was 10 minutes and it’s gone. But a couch is one thing. Anything local requires Facebook.

[–] Z745812939054@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

what's the $150 to get rid of a couch for? just drive it to the landfill

or call salvation army/goodwill/habitat for humanity-- they'll come get whatever

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 1 points 19 minutes ago (1 children)

Landfill doesn't take it for free. It's probably $50 and maybe borrow a trailer and a vehicle with a hitch.

[–] Z745812939054@lemmy.zip 1 points 18 minutes ago (1 children)

again, i give up. use facebook, because life can't be lived without it

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 1 points 15 minutes ago

Nah. I mean I’m off Facebook and own a trailer. I'm actually on your side I'm just trying to be realistic. $150 is too high unless you have to hire a company to haul it away.

You can totally leave Facebook. My wife is still on it but I think she doesn't use it as much. It's dying, just far too slowly.

[–] dudesss@piefed.ca 2 points 1 hour ago

For me, gradually gathering other contacts methods for my close friends and family. And then eventually permanently delete Facebook -- no need for data or whatever, it was mostly garbage anyways.

Same process with changing email providers.

It's the same way everyone talks about how dating apps suck and it's ruined dating, etc. But what is the real alternative?

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

But what is the real alternative?

Go out and meet people?

[–] Z745812939054@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

It’s the same way everyone talks about how dating apps suck and it’s ruined dating, etc. But what is the real alternative?

dating apps are different in that you're specifically using it to get a date, instead of trying to make your life look more fun/happy/glamorous than that of your "friends". once you meet someone and start a relationship, the app served its purpose and (in theory) you stop using it. i've never used a dating app, but i can see the value in them for people who are looking for specific less-than-common traits in a partner-- if you're asexual (for example) and looking for someone who's the same, then an app might be the only way you can find that someone. the alternative is go out looking on your own every day until you happen across whatever specific thing you're looking for by chance, which may never happen.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

But what is the real alternative?

Go out and meet people?

[–] Manjushri@piefed.social 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I get what you're saying, and to a certain extent you are correct, but where do you go to meet people when all the people you might meet are sitting at home swiping their phone screen?

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

don't know where you live but where I live, the outside is full of real people

[–] Zoot@reddthat.com 1 points 17 minutes ago

No they do have a point. How are you to meet people with similar interests, if your similar interests are "Enjoys staying at home and being cozy all day"

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

I remember when the backlash to Xitter was pretty high, culturally. I asked why our company was still using Xitter.

Crickets. And even after he gave the Nazi salute, still no change.

The answer is - "that's where everyone is". They aren't wrong. The network effect sucks.

[–] kestrel7_7@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

Meh. “That’s where everyone is” it’s more like that’s where all the bots and algorithmic gatekeeping are. I get way more engagement on mastodon than I ever did on twitter post-2012 algorithm shakeup. Before the algorithmic censorship, I got lots of engagement on twitter. But that twitter hasn’t existed for a long time. When I got on mastodon it was like oh. The algorithm is the entire problem. No wonder OWS and the Arab spring were so big. No wonder the algorithms came after them.

[–] Stormy@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 hours ago

It's owned and ran by a openly nazi guy, and is clearly manipulated with his bots, but politicians almost everywhere are still using it. Its crazy

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 1 points 1 hour ago

Exactly!!!! Share that with your friends!!!

[–] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 47 points 3 hours ago (3 children)

'We demand answers'???? Are you joking???

Zuckerberg is practically glued to trump side like a fashion accessory.

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 25 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

‘We demand answers’

Zuckerberg replied: "Dumb fucks".

[–] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 7 points 3 hours ago

Well, technically that is an answer.

So we're good now right?

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 8 points 3 hours ago

Here's their answer. The fuck are you doing on a fascist platform and expecting anything else?

[–] EntheoNaut@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 hours ago

Zuck full on cuckmode

[–] nastronot@lemmy.zip 29 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

The answer appears self evident. Don’t use Meta and that includes INSTAGRAM.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

You would think, but I still see that little 'f' at the bottom of soooo many webpages.

[–] dragontamer@lemmy.world 19 points 3 hours ago

Oh random election rules that changed all at once?

It's like 2024 again. This is part of the reason so many of us are here on Lemmy or BlueSky or whatever, we need to figure out alternative means of discussion.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 2 hours ago

This is the very least shocking thing about Tech Bros. I remember laughing right in the face of someone that told me they had to be on Parler because "Big Tech" was so liberal that they kept canceling conservatives and shadow banning them, etc.

I asked what kinds of "conservative" things they were posting on "Big Tech" that supposedly resulted in that?

[–] Cellery@quokk.au 1 points 1 hour ago

“We demand answers” and then no answers come and no one continues to demand them. Then everyone forgot, because it wasn’t continuously pushed in front of their eyes.

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

Meta platforms has 4 billion active users worldwide. That is an insane amount of power in the hands of one person.

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

You attempt to use one of the instruments of your oppression against the system that wields it. That was never going to work.

[–] splount@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Well, the obvious answer is that he's a fascist oligarch that controls media outlets so...

[–] tyo_ukko@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 hours ago

I'm not sure if it was Meta who kneecapped these protests. I didn't hear a single thing about them until today, so it was definitely very widely advertised.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 hours ago

No surprises as to why. Indivisible should immediately file the equivalent of an amicus brief to Brazilian courts because they are having these so-called "glitches" with Lula's campaign as well.
