Regardless of the outcome in the coming election, a new AP-NORC poll shows voters from both major political parties want the next Congress to focus on making life more affordable and ending the war in Iran, while fewer are looking for an emphasis on Donald Trump — whether it’s investigating him or supporting his agenda.

The results suggest that voters are ready for Congress to tackle core issues, despite Trump’s centrality in the midterm campaign.

About 8 in 10 registered voters, including a large majority of Republicans and Democrats, say lowering the cost of living should be one of the highest priorities for the session coming up, the survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds.

Our government is large enough to do multiple things. This narrow-sightedness only risks our democracy.

Laying the groundwork for democrats to say, "what we really need right now is unity, and that means letting everyone who is still actively trying to kill our country, off the hook."

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

We can do both.

Both issues stem from the fact that Trump started an illegal war; he needs to be impeached for that, if nothing else.

Yeah, the fact that the survey treated this like an "either A or B" issue instead of a "to get A we need to B" one is some narrative crafting bullshit

Bingo - this is one of the primary reasons billionaires buy control of media outlets and systems - to be able to shift focus and change narratives in order to change the path of democracy, of oversight, of public discourse. There isn’t limited focus, we are humans and can pay attention to many things at once, but there are limited resources, limited patience, limited time, so they just have to change those things enough to make their preferences the only options viable and give plausible deniability to the leaders who want to ignore the cries for change from the “extreme” elements of society. Even if it’s coming pervasively from all portions.

Affordability is a bit bigger than just Trumps war. Minimum wage needs to be raised by several orders of magnitude, all businesses need to be heavily and aggressively regulated, and the buggest need to be either broken up, seized and made public utilities, or both

Capitalism is the root cause there, and while Trump is a pretty perfect avatar for capitalism made flesh. The war with Iran is making it worse but shit ain’t been affordable since Covid or before

Maybe the voters know that we don't need investigations, only prosecution based on all the mountains of corruption that has been done in plain view.

[–] TN2VOA@reddthat.com 1 points 1 hour ago

This is a setup for letting Trump and his enablers off the hook. The Democrats will spout some nonsense about "national unity" or some such bullshit while sweeping it all under the rug.

[–] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 7 points 3 hours ago

To be able to say the phrase "8 in 10", of course you have to exclude Trump. I bet you could get pretty close to two-thirds of respondents who want him removed as well, tho.

[–] Astronut@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 hours ago

I believe the new Congress will be smart and competent enough to do both!

Lol "and Iran" makes it sound like the poll respondents agree with the war rather than to end it*
