Democratic Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has lost his unique leverage in Washington now that his party has pulled off a blue wave in the midterm elections.

The Democratic Party was handed control of the House and the Senate on Tuesday, dramatically reshaping Congress for the country.

In Pennsylvania, Fetterman has wielded the power of being the deciding vote in what was a narrowly divided Senate, as a Democrat willing to break with his party. But Democratic Senate gains across the country on Tuesday have pushed their seats from a minority of 47 to a majority of at least 54, after flipping at least seven seats, as of early Wednesday morning.

This means Fetterman, who has long faced criticism from wings of his party for obstructing the Democratic agenda by voting with Republicans, will now have less power to force his party to listen to the views he represents.

Yay! But can we still kick him out?

[–] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 3 points 24 minutes ago

When is his primary?

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 1 points 32 seconds ago

will he be kicked out of the party now?

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 76 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Lot of bummer headlines lately. This one really feels good.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 23 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Hopefully we get a handful more good ones in the near future.

[–] RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world 13 points 1 hour ago

The stuff that is going to start surfacing will turn out stomachs, but we need to power through it to rub some right wing noses in the poop they were willing to overlook to pwn the libs

(This is such a terribly written sentence you can rest assured I am a real person)

to force his party to listen to the views he represents.

Dropped the ball at the end there. That's the whole problem, he doesn't represent the people who got him in there.

[–] 13igtyme@startrek.website 11 points 1 hour ago

He's not representing the people that elected him. He's representing his views. Article still technically correct.

The real question is who will be speaker. Jeffries means they’ll sit around and do fuck all for 2 years. AOC means they’ll actually DO something. I guess we’ll see.

[–] MisterNeon@lemmy.world 28 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

I've never voted in a primary before, but in 2028 I will be looking into that.

[–] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 35 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Just FYI primaries are more impactful to vote in than general elections.

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 minutes ago

Gotta start somewhere. Do you topple a building from the top down, or do you place explosives in strategic points of support and bring it down from within? Both methods can, and have, been used.

[–] 13igtyme@startrek.website 3 points 2 hours ago (6 children)

Why have you never voted in a primary?

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 24 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Let's not blame people looking to change, but embrace them. Primaries are how we move the party to the left.

Last night was great progress towards damage control. Now we can start fixing things in the primaries.

[–] 13igtyme@startrek.website 7 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Where do you see blame in my question? It's an honest question.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 10 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

My comment was more intended to keep people from dogpiling on your comment to drum up blame for Fetterman on those who didn't participate previously but have now seen the importance. Your intent almost certainly wasn't blame, but it could still nudge people in that direction, even if that wasn't your intent.

I was usually the first in line to yell at people for not participating in the primaries over the last few years, and I felt a slight itch to fall back into it, so it was more of a "let's celebrate a win and move forward together" comment than anything specific about the intent of your comment.

Let's not blame people looking to change,

Part of them changing includes taking responsibility for their previous actions (or in this case, inaction). That includes accepting blame for the very real results of people never voting in primaries.

Fuck people who couldn't be bothered until it started to directly affect them. They are, in large part, responsible for getting stuck with shit candidates and they should be able to accept this reality if they actually want to change.

[–] areakode@riskeratspizza.com 18 points 2 hours ago

Lots of people don't fuck with politics. But politics will always fuck with you.

Sounds like somebody who finally woke up. We have to participate in democracy for it to function.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 2 points 56 minutes ago* (last edited 55 minutes ago)

Bro only 10% of americans vote in primaries. AKA the literal check and balance to incumbent power but i digress.

like FR, that is such a 2016 question.

[–] DonkeyStar@lemmy.world 8 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

My personal answer is that you have to register as a member of a party in my state, and I’m not fond of being on lists like that.

[–] Juniper@piefed.zip 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

My state has this policy, too. I wonder if it is something we can change

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 58 minutes ago

Of course! You just need votes

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 45 minutes ago* (last edited 45 minutes ago) (1 children)

Get over it like the rest of us have. Time to be an adult.

[–] MisterNeon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I usually don't know anything about candidates before the actual election starts ramping up. I'm usually voting against people rather than for them.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 44 minutes ago

That's literally because nobody votes in primaries.

It's like people don't put 3 seconds of thought into figuring out why the candidates you're presented with suck.

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Might not have been old enough

[–] MisterNeon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Nah, I'm old as Hell.

[–] sportsjorts@lemmy.zip 1 points 42 minutes ago

Oh my god. Those words!!!!! Ha fuck you fetterman get fucked you fucking clod!!!!

[–] TheGiantKorean@lemmy.today 8 points 2 hours ago

Good. Fuck that guy.

[–] el_twitto@lemmy.zip 1 points 45 minutes ago

He never did.

[–] Amuro_eat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 55 minutes ago

Maybe he’ll stroke out in his irrelevance and leave the world

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

I mean, we'll see.

I suspect the magic number to pass a bill in the Senate is going from 50 back to 60, again

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 57 minutes ago

Some, but hopefully we can get Ukraine the support it should already should have had.
