I got a buddy who texts me "Give me a call when you get a chance"
Always allows me to finish up my work and call them when the time suits me.
Meanwhile, coworkers just call me a minute before I'm supposed to go into a meeting and expect to have my attention for a half hour. It's on the calendar you dipshit.
Indeed, but only with a rotary dial.
Hell yeah.
Fuck cell phones and cell towers, unironically. Fundamentally incompatible with both software freedom and privacy.
God I hate text messaging. Instead of pissing away half a day or more sending text messages back and forth, call me and I will solve the problem you texted me about in less than a 1 minute. 5 minutes if you require a technical explanation.
Fookin' waste of my time and day.
Autism and crippling shyness, yeah
You just need the right soundboard. This is a personal favorite: https://soundboard.com/sb/angryblackguy1.
Don’t caaall my fuckin’ house
🏆
People afraid to talk over the phone, but also complaining about being lonely. Time to step up the social game or become grass-eaters.
I downvote cause I feel concerned about this.
Text- respond whenever
Call- attention now
It’s a call to responsibility, and I hate those
What do you fear?
That you're not up to the task?
That you'll dissapoint your peers?
Pick up that phone and face your fears
For you will never miss
the paths you failed on
but the ones you never dared to tread.
In what world do you live that time sensitivity is never a thing? Also it's just a helluva lot easier sometimes to talk for one minute instead of write for 10 and still get the wrong tone.
I used to make fun of people who didn’t answer unknown numbers. Like they had something to hide. Like bill collectors were after them or something.
Then my number got into some kind of spammer / scammer database. Sometimes I was getting 10 calls a day from the same assholes spoofing different numbers.
Now pretty much all unknown callers go to voicemail. I have missed a couple of slightly important calls because of this. And those idiots didn’t leave a voicemail or follow up text. Like if you are a stranger making a legit call, then leave a fucking voicemail? What makes you think you are so important I will risk letting scammers know they have an active number? That YOU can’t be bothered to leave a voicemail to verify your identity? The world is all backwards now. Get off my lawn.
Yes why does nobody use voicemails? I never get it. Same number calls me 3x over the course of a week - brother if you can't even leave a message for me to call you back or pick up the next time it can't be that important.
Nowadays I use call screening on every call unless I know the person. If they say their name and what they want, it shows on my screen and I pick up if I'm interested. But most don't do that and hang up as soon as the voice starts. Eh, write me an email then, I'm not gonna respond if you can't even say your name.
I find checking voicemail so tedious and inconvenient as someone worth audio processing issues and the quality is usually so bad I have to listen to it several times and still can't 100% understand. Voicemail transcription helps but I ain't paying a subscription for that shit when that person can just send a text.
I don’t check my voicemails because I keep getting spammed by different numbers and they also leave voicemails.
I used to make semi-sensitve phone calls from my personal cell so of course I blocked my number. I would however leave a voicemail stating my name, my work location, that it was not an emergency and that I would call back again within 5 minutes. 90% of the time people answered the second call.
You might consider altering your voicemail recording to say that if you don't have the number saved, a voicemail is required for a call back.
Mine is, "Due to a dramatic increase in scam callers, I don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognize. If this is a legitimate call, leave a message or send me a text and I'll get back to you."
I've slowly gone from being in this meme to being the person that starts calling especially for things that are even a little time sensitive or spontaneous. I will generally only do it with my closest friends except for the rare occasion, and family and no longer feel that way if they call me back. If they don't pick up I of course don't take it personally and respect my friends that have said they just prefer texting, but I've found since making this change I feel closer to people and have looked forward to chatting with them and hearing their voice.
I need your immediate answer. If I knew you'd answer straight away to a message I'd be fine with that, but I can't be waiting for the zoomer on the other end to muscle up courage to check my message and maybe answer it at some point
Tbh you have the same issue with people in general with emails.
What is that saying, 'lack of planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on my part' or something.
My friends know that they only call me if their house is actively on fire, they are being robbed at gunpoint, or they just won the lottery and want to split the winnings. Family also includes lunch/dinner plans. Only exception is when we have planned a call for a date and time, otherwise you're greeting my voicemail. Landlines is the exact same situation. I might be taking a shower, asleep, taking a dump, getting freaky with a friend; it doesn't matter. Leave a text message and I'll get back as soon as I'm done crying from taco tuesday, or finishing waking up the neighbors with moans and screams, or whatever else.
Email is 'sometime today' communication, and gets handled at the beginning or end of the day, or whenever I'm on the can. Anyone expecting a rapid response via email is a proper dunce.
These emergencies come up because the planners (the people I'm trying to urgently reach) haven't planned properly. Everything is fine if the situation on the ground is the same as they think in the city office or the consulting firm, but once something unexpected comes up that hasn't been accounted for, I need to reach certain people, quick. We could make decisions on our own but the that's often specifically not allowed without consulting those certain people...
So plan better or be around to pick up the phone.
Tap for spoiler
we're apparently all just painting hypotheticals/anecdotes so here's mine
You probably didn't need an immediate answer, but you wanted one. You also pressured me into making a quick decision based on 2 paragraphs of new information you just dumped on me, expecting me to not only remember all of it, but immediately understand and integrate it into my decision making process.
I'll probably remember half of your info dump at best and the likelihood of you getting the answer you were hoping for just went down hard because I feel slighted by your ambush and because I don't feel informed enough to give you a "yes".
If I did say "yes" we might be in bigger trouble though, since I likely misunderstood or forgot something.
Put it in writing and make both our lives easier.
You can still call if I didn't reply after 10 minutes.
You can even include your deadline in the message if you have one.
weird I'm an elder millennial and you just sound unprepared. do I need to hold your hand? why can't you find the information you need yourself with the resources everyone else uses? why are you always in this state on immediacy? why is your failing someone else's fault because they didn't answer "immediately"? why do you sound like my abusive father? it's almost like you don't think ahead and blame others for your shortcomings. I have a shit memory and ADHD and I don't need to "get someone on the horn".
git gud n00b
what sort of friendships do you have where you're routinely running into extremely time sensitive important decisions?
sounds like you just plan poorly tbh
if this is about work, then same goes. phone calls are undocumented and I'm not gonna give you any proper answer via phone on the spot unless it's a very simple yes/no
Yeah, can't wait to text someone a question and wait for an answer.
Can't imagine why there's a loneliness epidemic.
Most of the time you call someone they don’t answer. Texts will almost always get a response
I call people as much as possible. Texting takes too long. And I NEVER open my email. Email is fake and gay
Hi, I know this is just a shitpost, but I feel the need to say something serious about it for a sec. I find the image unsettling. Deliberately violating a child's personal space boundaries like that, where they can't escape the situation, for a pic and a laugh at their expense, I see as a form of child abuse. Like, if you look at the kid's face, you should be able to see it. Right? It just feels bad to see a pic like that being used as a meme template. And I'm not saying anyone is a bad person for using or enjoying the meme/template. I'm just asking and hoping that you please think on it and reconsider how you feel about it.
Aww c'mon, what's the worst that could happen?! He gets bit by a camel? Man dies of camel bite in Ahmedabad ... oh wait
He just wants to know what day it is
You think the person taking a pic deliberately lured the donkey/camel in there?
I hadn't considered that, but it's possible. The vehicle is parked with the window open while the person in the driver's seat is taking pics of the child hiding from the large animal whose head is entirely inside the vehicle. So yeah, I can see how the driver could have also intentionally lured the animal to approach in the first place. But regardless, they seem to be intentionally abusing that child. Otherwise, why leave the car parked with the window open as a large animal approaches, and why take pics of the child instead of helping them? Like, if it somehow happened so quickly that they couldn't have prevented it, why start taking pics instead of pushing the animal back out? Why not drive away?
It looks like a stock photo and likely staged.
Doesn't look that way to me, but I'm not here to argue about it. Idk what else to say, so I'll probably just leave it there and hope my original comment was worth sharing in the first place.
I got a call today from Ireland
I immediately knew that it was a scam, especially when the guy on the other end was speaking Chinese
I just repeatedly burped into the phone until he got pissed off enough to hang up on me
For a while I kept getting a phone call around like 8am while I was at work id just let it ring because it was so bizarre. Finally one time I decided to just one word text back saying they had the wrong number at like around 4am and finally got a response saying it was some uncle my mom had given my number to for him to get in contact with her for some reason
We never knew who might be calling. Now the phones tell you who is calling before you answer and still some people are freaked out. I don’t get it, but I think I’m becoming that way myself.
if somebody calls me and I have their number saved in my phone: 50/50 if I pick up, depending on how social vs anxious I'm feeling.
if somebody calls me and I don't have their number saved in my phone: block, forget, move on.
Presumably, if they call, you're in some sort of personal relationship with the person, so whether or not you answer says something about how much you value that relationship. No? You trust that they only call if it's something important.
I only refuse calls from unknown numbers, never from someone in my contacts.
